:: The One with Shell Recruitment Day/Negative Week ::

Posted in Emo-z, General, Keretaku, UKM

This past whole week I was greeted with nothing but negativity in whole. That aside for the time being, I was in Miri last week for a couple of day to go through the Shell Recruitment Day.

This picture turned out to be the only nice picture in my trip.

The flight to East Malaysia was decent enough, no frills from Air Asia making up for the lack of legroom in the A320. In total the flight to Miri Airport took just slightly over 2 hours without much turbulence.

Sorry for the poor stitching.

Miri town is a peaceful one. In comparison to KL, congestions here are nothing, maybe perhaps of the non peak hour traveling schedule that I had to adhere to. One thing I noticed that there wasn’t any bus services around. Taxis were buzzing around like usual though.

The Shell Recruitment Day was held across Miri River in the Piasau Camp, or as locals would call it the Shell Camp as many expats stay in the estate like bungalow units. The final stage interview took place in Piasau House No. 100 where the it was the ex-residence of the Managing Director.

Piasau 100 fronting.

The Piasau 100 was turned into a meeting place and for SRD purposes since Shell began having 2 Managing Directors and the both of them can’t share the house no more.

Piasau 100’s living room which is around the size of the entire floor plan for a low cost house.

Here I met Cheah (Mech), Chin Wen (Mech), Naguib (Mech), Seow Kim (Chem) and Zaid (Chem). They were a pleasant bunch even though half of us were undergraduates and the other half were already in their respective industries.

4 central units make the freaking hall icey cold.

All six of us there were pondering on the 4 central units in one living room. Too much money to fling about perhaps Shell?

Minibar outside the living room on the back of the Piasau 100. Further back in the coastal shore.

The whole SRD was a individual assessment interview without any competition what so ever with the other candidates. From the Civil Engineering line, I was limited to not many technical aspects except for Discipline Engineering (Structural Design), Environmental, Well Engineering (Offshore) and perhaps Logistics.

Thank you Kak Dayang for coordinating the SRD Miri

In SRD, all candidates are assessed on 4 criteria’s; Capacity, Achievement, Relationship and Technical [CAR(T)].

Skipping the boring parts, I got a call 2 days after SRD and I was not given an offers as I didn’t pass the SRD on the technical part. All 6 weren’t offered.

In my absence in Miri, one of lecturers decided to give us a river development project that includes a dam, power generation turbine and a resort. The sad part is that most of the works are Civil works when I am the only Civil undergrad in my group of 14 Electrical undergrads.

On a even sadder note, my car was scratched on the left hand side and repairs for my rear right absorber bush and front driver lower arm will cost me in excess of RM 500 when I decide to get it fixed sometime next week.

It was a blessing in disguise for me…. because I really hoped that u wouldn’t go that far… coz if u were with Shell, u wouldn’t be able to spend some quality time with me as both of us will be workaholic…worst stilll, long distance may wreck the relationship…..which i am so scared off!

and of course, i do pray that God will bless you one career which gonna be an envy of everyone but based in klang valley…. I am serious, dear! I would want to work based from home in near future…. tak mau lari sini sana already!!!! U should be the breadwinner of the family by then!!!

And of course, I am very sorry about your car. Partly my fault, I should have driven another car that night…so that 7 of us will be evenly divided and not squeezed into your car and spoiled the bush… i am sorry dear….

Lol… if you need a contact to get ur car done, let me know… I know a guy (*and yes it’s legal, even tho most sentences that start with “I know a guy” end up in some illegal shit*) in Sunway that does good work and is reasonably cheap…

And Grace is right, working in Miri would suck… So freaking boring..

AWWW…manis-nya!!!!! dear sini dear sana…hahaa ouch..my dream of joining Shell shattered too when you didn’t get the offer. nvm…there’s always greener grass elsewhere =) looks like PIGGY spell out for you on certain things…1, to be near her. 2, bread winner of the family while she becomes the siew lai lai…hahaha

“This past whole week I was greeted with nothing bout negativity in whole”

    You mean…

“This past whole week I was greeted with nothing BUT negativity in whole”

    Right?

Filled with negativity? The exact reason why I quote from Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann in the other post:

    “Don’t believe in yourself,
    Believe in ME,
    Who believes in YOU!!”

Sorry to hear abt ur car…was it from the incident you wrote in the previous post?

  5. Kevin Quah

grace : hooooo…nampaknya the kucing sudah muncul dari beg! not one of you actually did pray for me to get the job ha! all shared the same prayer “pray that kev doesnt get that job in miri”.

    buggers.

bout the car takpe le. what is done is done. but from here on forth, i will have to put my foot down grace.

sha : bro…you know that friend ah, potong kereta ke? lol. sunway is a distance away from bangi. its ok though. the shop i’m currently patronizing is a branch from their sunway main office.

called poh yap or something. bikin tyre nya.

jccy : looks like you were the only one that actually wanted me to get into shell. bugger. for all the wrong reasons!

silly fella. its my pleasure to be able to get grace not having to work le. soh lou.

azfar : eh, typo! thx for pointing it out. bout the current repairs the prevoius accident had nothing to do with it.

the front lower arm has been squeeking long b4 the accident, i paid no attention to it as i went over spd bumps like a lowered car will (no zig zag la).

as for the rear it only occured after i overloading the back seats and went over damansara uptown’s bumpy roads on the slow side. the kong kong sound happened in uptown itself. what happen was the absorber bush for the rear right sank lower into the absorber itself until it got stuck and the fella had to pry it out to half the original height.

  6. s2k_247

    Bukan potong la brudder…

They do a lot of work for cars that have been in accidents and scarps and whatnot…

But i guess loyalty to a shop is better, coz they know you and give u better service.

  7. Grace

as u can read from my 1st comment of this particular entry… I am very concerned about our relationship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not about being a bugger!

  8. yes2leong

    haha….. i also wan u to go SHELL lo…… haha…… for me to go in later…haha…. yala… MIRI somemore…. i ALREADY so far…. JB… U LAGI FAR!! waliew………hahah……..

Say NO to SHELL…. and say “YES” to PETRONAS……..hahhahahhah…………. for now……hehehe

  9. Kevin Quah

sha : normally loyalty works but in certain cases it doesnt. like the shop grace n i patronize in uptown ah….i getting a little cheesed off with them already.

grace : thats y i told you i wouldnt have gone for it lo.

    loong : petronas all malay.

  10. tokmoh

Ok, well hopefully the problem stops.

Anyway, cheer up!! Shell’s not everything, although yea, have to admit, their staff benefit and salary are very very awesome + tempting….

    @yes2leong

Petronas lagi la…you go to Sudan, Vietnam, Thailand, etc countries you just dun wanna go. You need to rely on luck/good connection to get to nice countries like Dubai, US, er…where else?

Even in Msia, they’ll send to Labuan, Kerteh, etc forgot edi. Tempat jin tendang, wakakaka. But that’s where the black oil lies ;)

The oni larkie baistard to work in twin towers are accountants, managers, er…desk job works generally. Engineers? Sorry la…

  11. Kevin Quah

tokmoh : so late u takyah tidur ah. anyway i didnt mean to put it that petronas is racial but you know la, tarak chance to go up the ladder cuz of the kulitification issue.

i wanna go sue our primary school teachers la. they brainwash us that professional jobs are great this and that la but all bullshit wan. kena tipu big time. remember? last time when we were kids….what profession they push? engr, lawyer, med….

anyway, i just realize my dashboard one of the LED’s is dimming out. the one on the left side of the speedo.

  12. Grace

Oh well, I just wanted to remind u only about why I wanted u to stay…

Anyway… yes we are all being cheated in primary school that professionals = success! But I don’t think so!!!

The ones who are doing business and climbing the corporate ladder via marketing or sales or business admin are the ones earning the top $$$$ plus enjoying life now! This is because doctors who earn $$$ do not have quality time to spend too!!!

Now some more we have kerismudin to continue as education minister… habis lah anak adik aku!!!

  13. lizze

sorry, i m too heavy…but anyway, we still have a fun times together right???? think of the fun time we spend together is very refreshing..

  14. tokmoh

I’ve been a nocturnal being lately, eh? lol

No problem on that Petronas issue. I despise them too for some other reasons too, actually.

Traditional education system is on the brink of being labelled as obsolete in this Information Age. Your grouse (and mine too) is very much addressed in Rich Dad, Poor Dad book by Kiyosaki.

Alamak, another problem with LED pulak?

    @Grace

Which is why we need to educate ourselves financially, a void subject in not just our education system, but for most part of the world. If someone’s financially literate, they can become broke, in millions of debts and yet still be able to bounce back and become richer than ever. Donald Trump is a good example. Yes, he may have a degree, but most of the time, I suppose it wasn’t of much help. It was his common sense that helped most of the time.

Wit kerismudin as education minister, your anak adik will learn waving keris is a noble act and that U Must Not Object/Oppose, zzzz…

  15. jccy

kev remembered what i told you ya? hope that you get back your share as promised by Shell…haha =)

  16. Kevin Quah

grace : guess we all were cheated huh. i personally dont care what hishamuddin is doing at the moment. IMHO, the student’s success is not based on whatever education system/teacher. its solely based on his/her own initiative to do well in studies.

lizzie : my goodness. no worries my friend. i never did blame anyone for anything. now i know why they say ” happiness comes with cost!” ;P

tokmoh : issue with selling our great grade low sulphur petroleum to other nations? btw, the LED thing seems to be solved already.

I think my car is making a mickey out of me.

btw, i cant remember what RDPD is about dy. read it yrs back. i just remember the liability thingy.

jccy : i hate you bro. i hate you.

  17. grace

I am so sorry, my dear Kev …. seems like your destiny with your car is just not right! Hahahaha…

  18. geraldho

despite of all the things that pisses u off…be comforted with the fact that God still loves you the same…it’s not like He love you any lesser and we all love you…:) in a brotherly way…Muahahah:P

  19. grace

Gerald: your “LOVE YOU” in a brotherly way makes me laugh…hahahaha…… *grabs the piggy bolster for you now!*

  20. Kevin Quah

grace : oi u make it sound like i’m in TVB drama la. what? THE DRIVE OF LIFE AH?!

gerald : u love me as a bro meh? everyday condemn me.

I was doing some research where I stumbled upon ur blog. U shared that u went thru SRD and co-incidentally I got a call from Shell asking me to go to Miri next week for the SRD.

I have a few questions that I hope u can help. First, what do they test us during the SRD and what is it like working/living in Miri?

Appreciate ur reply. And all the best in ur new job.
