:: The One with Messy ::

Always wanted to do a “How To” on this.

Got a set of front disc brake pads to replace the thinning set on my ride.

Things got really messy and rather complicated/easy, depending on how you look at it.  So the “How To” was aborted =p
Just remember guys, that there are only two things separating you from the tarmac; tires and brakes.
Save on other stuff, but please do get quality products for these. Your life does depend on them.

gerald : i wanted to do a how to thingy. but it was so messy (dirty, oily bla bla). those things are called disc brakes.

  • Grace Says:

tak pernah tengok, apa hantu tu? disc brakes?

  • vincent Says:

lol! aborted? why? coz no one is taking the photographs for you? this is one interesting ‘how to’, never seen anyone doing this before.

so… your dad aborted this ‘how to’ too? ‘bapa borek anak rintik’ ma.. lol.

  • kevin Says:

grace : yea those are brake pads. study physics la silly. its under the F=ma chapter. =p

vincent : nah, its really dirty. brake dust + dot4 fluid.
umm i can run you through it.
    1) the disc brakes are either held by pin or in my case my 2 bolts on the calipers.
    2) remove the bolts and slide the calipers out.
    3) the calipers work on hydraulics. thin brake pads means that the calipers are closer to one another (putting new ones in wont fit as the calipers are “locked” in place by the fluid)
    4) locate the nipple (bleeding point) on the caliper. the usually have a rubber cap covering it.
    5) find something (a metal rod/screwdriver) as leverage to distance the calipers. its impossible to do without 1st loosening the nipple and bleeding it whilst trying to force the calipers apart. brake fluid will spurt out from the nipple will doing this.
    6) immediately lock the nipple after “releasing” calipers. you dont want air to enter the hydraulic system.
    7) put the new brake pads on the disc brakes and slowly put on the calipers on. make sure the springs are properly put. they keep the calipers in place.
    8) release more brake fluid if the calipers dont fit.
    9) before taking it out for a spin. do a quick test by manually spinning the wheel and braking.
    10) careful while driving the 1st few kms. some brake pads need to “bed in” sebelum makan.

eh, Bro ,….I really salute you la, can type such a looooooooooooooongggggggggggg comment in your comment box, sumore in proper sentences …hahaha (*.^Y)

  • kevin Says:

cicak : sei ah lei. =p

  • tokmoh Says:

I suppose changing the engine oil yourself would be next… no? :P

  • KitKat Says:

    Next title:

    The One With Turbo????

    Nice explaination here dude!

  • vincent Says:

thanx for the step by step, i’ll surely get back to u if i ever got into any trouble DIYing anything.

haha, yeah, what’s next? engine oil? turbo? rebuilding the engine? port & polish? balancing? lol.

  • kevin Says:

tokmoh : engine oil i just changed. but its one of those things that i dont do myself as i dont know where to dispose off the spent engine oil.

    no to longkang.

kitkat : thanks. turbo ah, turbo too elaborate to DIY. intercooler, open pod filter and stuff.

vincent : balancing kenot DIY la. btw, tarak budget nak DIY benda benda ni. perhaps next up is to repaint the front grill/change steering. economy tarak baik.

  • KitKat Says:

air filter? electric stabilizer? – just what I can think of right now…

  • Justin Says:

    4) locate the nipple (bleeding point) on the caliper. the usually have a rubber cap covering it.

    bleeding nipple?
    ROFLMAOWTFBBQ

i know why aborted la. too oily and greasy and messy to take photos right. will end up dirtying your camera.

i just changed the disc brakes of my dad’s car not too long ago at the workshop. around RM75-100, if i remember correctly.

if you can do it yourself, sure much cheaper.

  • kevin Says:

kitkat : air filter i just plunked in a K&N drop in. open pods are too exp and too noisy. the rest no plans as yet.

justin : bugger. its really called a nipple under the bra. muahahahahah.

anyway, its really dirty lo. whole lengan hitam.
75-100 plus workmanship ok ah. my brake pads were 115, dot4 fluid were 15 (just to top up after bleeding). workmanship i think if i did it outside would be 15 per side.

  • KitKat Says:

    RM 15 X 4 = RM 60!!! That’s lotsa moni u know…

That’s why DIY comes in, experience = priceless.

  • kevin Says:

kitkat : i assume its 15. dont know how much they actually charge. and i only changed the front brake pads. belakang still got quite a fair bit.

anyway just realised that waja is one of the few protons that has 4 disc brakes.

  • vincent Says:

most protons now come with 4 disc brakes.

selepas tukar pad brek, bila mau tunjuk kereta? oh, did you change the rims yourself too? ask the fella at the shop to pinjam equipment n ask him to tepi. lol.

  • kevin Says:

vincent : lol. mana bley! itu tayar tarak tau bikin sendiri la!

anyway, my car is just your modest looking ride.
